e-Schools project to launch
13th May 2008
School standards across Northern Ireland are to be boosted by a new IT system, it has been reported. According to the Belfast Telegraph, some £4 million is to be spent on implementing a new technology system, which will collect and store data from the country's 1200 schools. It is believed that the new scheme, labelled the e-Schools project, which has been developed by Hewlett-Packard in conjunction with Asidua, will help in raising the standards of schooling.
Over the next five years some 721 million records will be processed on issues from attainment to attendance. Barry Mulholland, chief executive of the Western Education and Library Board, said: "This will significantly improve the quality and speed at which information on school performance is accessible resulting in better decisions, lower administration costs and the setting and monitoring of new standards in schools."
The news source stated that this is the first time that reliable data relating to Northern Ireland specifically will be made available to education stakeholders.

Asidua supports Cares@Christmas
21st December 2007
Belfast, Northern Ireland [December 21, 2007]:
Asidua recently joined forces with other leading companies across Northern Ireland in demonstrating their collective commitment to the community by supporting the Cares @ Christmas campaign organised by Business in the Community (BitC).
Each Christmas, through the Cares @ Christmas initiative, responsible and generous companies and individuals are able to make a difference by donating gifts in an organised manner through workplaces and businesses. The Cares @ Christmas collection provides a very simple approach to tackling some difficult problems such as homelessness, loneliness and other disadvantaged groups. A Cares @ Christmas present can often be the only gift someone receives all year.
A total of over 3,000 gifts were collected this year - 50% more than last year - helping to benefit 3,000 children across Northern Ireland this Christmas. Donations included TV’s, Hi-fi’s, bikes, games, children’s toys, CD’s, gift vouchers and much more.
This Christmas 45 responsible companies resolved to take part in the campaign along with Asidua. Included amongst these were Deloitte, HBOS, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Royal Mail and Ulster Bank.

Asidua rides the hi-tech wave
14th December 2007
ULSTER Business [December 2007]:
INSIDE STORY - editor David Cullen interviews the CEO, COO and Sales & Marketing Director of Asidua at the company's Belfast headquarters:
Taking Pole Position: Asidua rides the hi-tech wave
Northern Ireland’s fast-growing IT industry is in debt to the extraordinary talent, vision and commitment of a small but highly motivated army of technical and business pioneers – and few could argue that the brains behind Belfast-based software firm Asidua are leading the way.
The company, which Asidua Chief Executive Steve Brankin and Chief Operating Officer Angela Canavan helped to set up after a management buy-out of Fujitsu’s local research and development arm in 2002 – a fearless move considering the global dot.com bubble was starting to burst – was recently named as Northern Ireland’s fastest-growing business at the prestigious all-island Deloitte Technology Fast 50 awards in Dublin. It was also the only local company to make it onto the UK-wide Deloitte Fast 50 list of entrepreneurial hi-tech firms.
The Deloitte award in particular demonstrates not only Asidua’s revenue growth but also highlights the company’s continued expansion – its head count has leapt from less than 60 to 120 in only three years and there are plans under way to push that closer towards 200 within 18 months through an expansion plan that takes in Birmingham and Dublin.
“The growth in revenue, headcount and margin is underpinned by a sound business model, set to deliver the right services and managed by a strong team,” said Steve, a former finalist in the Ernst & Young Ireland Entrepreneur of the Year. “Although all of these awards have come along at around the same time, they are the product of the hard work and preparation of the whole company.”
“When we carried out the MBO, we thought we would have a 20-30 per cent chance of success,” said Steve, who, along with a senior team of eight, became instantly responsible for a staff of 55. “We didn’t really have a service offering. We had no customers either. What we had was a bunch of smart people.”
Angela said that while that challenge was daunting, they were always confident about their plans: “If we couldn’t make a business out of this highly-talented, motivated group of people, then there was no hope for anybody.”
Asidua, which provides world-leading software consultancy services across a broad spectrum of business sectors, with clients in both the public and private sectors, has recently acquired an additional 6,000 sq ft of office space near its 12,000 sq ft headquarters in Belfast to enable further growth.
“It’s been a whirlwind year,” Asidua Sales & Marketing Director Bob McClean tells Ulster Business. “We’ve grown the company here quite significantly. We’ve recently opened an office in Birmingham with a staff of nine and we’re preparing to open in Dublin in the New Year. We expanded here in Belfast because we were simply running out of space.”
Bob said the company was keen to take its highly-successful model to new territories for several reasons. “Our application and data integration service is quite client-intensive – it’s not something you can do completely remotely. You need to be close to your customers. This way, public and corporate sector clients in both the UK and Ireland can be more easily addressed.”
Asidua has two key divisions - Business Services, which provides Application and Data Integration (ADI) services, which allows customers to streamline and automate business processes, and Device Services, which supplies Embedded Telecoms Integration (ETI) capabilities. This division designs and writes the software that provides network equipment makers the flexibility to integrate the latest offerings from hardware component manufacturers – it is this type of development and integration activity that delivers the dramatic changes everyone has witnessed in telecommunications services available today .
“A particular market of interest for Asidua Device Services is the DSL or broadband sector,” said Bob. “In fact, millions of broadband lines right across the UK are run across programme code that was developed by us for a key client. Our services are also supporting clients in Finland, Germany, China and the US – key export markets for us.”
Asidua reaches this global market through a range of leading device providers, including Austin, Texas-based Wintegra, which produces specialised network processor technology used in many modern telecommunications systems, and the giant German semiconductor manufacturer Infineon.
Partnering Strategy
Expanding globally can be a challenge for any fast-growing firm, particularly when it comes to language and culture, but Asidua said it has developed a model that sees most of the work for these international clients being carried out at its Belfast base.
The ability to develop and nurture strategic partnerships can make the difference between success and failure in the high-tech industry, a fact Asidua recognised right from the start.
“We only look for business in the two areas we are expert in,” said Bob. “We don’t try to be jack of all trades and a master of none. It also means we can easily fit in with other organisations such as industry heavyweights Hewlett Packard (HP), BT Global Services or Steria. They can see that we will add to their offering and expertise and not compete directly.
“Working with your partners, you have the stamina and flexibility of a full-service team. You can offer a broader range of IT solutions, maximize the value of your customers’ investments, and help ensure market success.”
Public Sector Focus
Public sector reforms are also creating opportunities for Asidua both at home and abroad. “Asidua has developed expertise and methodologies through our extensive work in the private sector, which if brought to bear, can assist the public sector in Northern Ireland as it improves,” Bob said.
Northern Ireland’s Review of Public Administration (RPA), established to “rebalance the economy to be less dependent on the public sector” is helping to underpin that local growth for Asidua and the experience it is gaining locally is helping it to make a similarly strong business case for its services elsewhere.
“We, along with our partner HP, have recently been appointed the preferred bidder on the innovative eSchools project for Northern Ireland – a solution that will see the information held about pupils put to more effective use,” said Bob. “It’s a five year contract and really what it means is it’s just another validation that our ADI offering has a direct applicability to the public sector and the corporate sector.
Bob said that in terms of public sector reform, the Republic of Ireland is starting to think along similar lines and that the company is hopeful of the opportunities that this might bring. “Public sector organisations tend to look at what their peers are doing in other territories,” he said. “All public sector bodies are facing reform agendas in each of their territories because there’s a desire to drive efficiency and become more citizen-centric.”
The NI Direct initiative, which will see all central government departments and many agencies become available via one point of contact, is a case in point. Asidua has joined BT and Capita in a joint bid for the multi-million pound contract which is expected to be announced next year.
Essential training
Steve Brankin said he recognises that the quality of Asidua’s staff has helped it to build its solid reputation and how its investment in training has helped ensure this remains intact.
“We set targets for every manager across the company to ensure that their people are expertly trained. Training is what gives us our depth and capability. Of course, it’s a big cost, but it gives us the flexibility and confidence to get on with it.”
Bob is in complete agreement. “As a service provider, all you really have is your staff and the only proof of how good you are is your track record,” he says. “These are two things that a company like ours should live by and it’s why we have put such a focus on investment into it.”
Indeed, the company was recognised for these efforts earlier this year, when Angela took delivery of a special award in recognition for the company’s programme to promote a culture of understanding and importance of employee health. In addition, at the same event, Asidua was short-listed for the ‘Innovation’ award and received formal accreditation for attaining ‘Employer of Choice’ status earlier this year.
“The work we do is interesting, challenging and varied,” said Bob. “We’re not a software factory. We’re a much more dynamic organisation than that. It’s why we attract top technical staff.”

Asidua takes special Employer of Choice award
14th June 2007
Belfast, Northern Ireland [June 14, 2007]: Asidua Ltd., the leading provider of Application and Data Integration services, with headquarters in Belfast, has received a special award in recognition of a programme to promote a culture and understanding of the importance of employee health. The special award for "Health and Well-Being" went to Asidua at the "Employer of Choice" Gala Awards Evening, held at the Hilton Templepatrick Hotel on June 7, 2007. In addition, at the same event, Asidua was short-listed for the “Innovation” award and received formal accreditation for attaining "Employer of Choice" status earlier this year.
Asidua was one of over 20 Northern Ireland organisations - from across the public, voluntary and private sectors - present at the evening to accept individual "Employer of Choice" awards. Lynda Bryans, the UTV television and U105 radio broadcaster, hosted the event, and keynote speaker Mary Keightley, Director of Mind Associates, addressed guests on the importance of an optimistic outlook in relation to longevity, good health and employability.
Health and Well-Being award
Responding to the company’s success at the awards evening, Angela Canavan, Asidua’s Chief Operations Officer said "Asidua is delighted to receive the Employer of Choice award in this significant category. This special award recognises the emphasis that Asidua places on the importance of employee health - physical and mental - and the benefits of pro-active stress management. Asidua believes in adopting best practices to achieve work-life balance for our staff."
Work-Life Balance Audit
The judges were particularly impressed with Asidua's completion of a follow-up "Work-Life Balance" audit of employees and demonstration of a long-term commitment to their health and well-being. Asidua scored highly with the judges through an ability to embed health and well-being into the organisational culture, using the audit to create performance measures throughout the process. Founded just 5 years ago, Asidua now employs more than 100 staff at its headquarters in central Belfast and at new offices near Birmingham.
About Employer of Choice
The Employer of Choice programme is a positive, inclusive approach in helping companies to achieve a work-life balance in the workplace. Employers are challenged to identify, within their own workplace, how both parties can benefit from a new approach to working practices – one that will enable employees to maintain a better balance between their working and home lives, and at the same time, works within the parameters of the organisation. The Employer of Choice programme was funded through the Department for Employment and Learning and the three special awards are being supported by Invest NI, Action Mental Health and Business in the Community (BitC).

Asidua makes Fast Friends with Concern
21st May 2007
Belfast, Northern Ireland [May 21, 2007]: Staff at Belfast software technology company Asidua have together raised a staggering £2655.04 for Concern Worldwide’s ‘Fast Friends’ Appeal. Asidua staff recently presented a cheque for this amount to Concern’s Deirdre Murphy at the company’s headquarters in central Belfast.
Supporters of the international charity’s 2006 campaign were asked ‘what would you do for a friend?’ and urged to fundraise for communities in the developing world. Staff members at Asidua undertook the 24-hour fast in exchange for sponsorship from family and friends and the company generously matched the funds raised by staff donations.
Asidua spokesperson Angela Canavan, the company’s head of operations said, “Asidua undertakes a range of charity projects each year as part of our broader corporate social responsibility ethos, and Concern Fast Friend’s was a perfect fit with our company values. Going without food for 24 hours was a real challenge for staff, but gave us some insight into the continual hunger that millions of people around the world experience every day.” Software consultancy Asidua employs over 100 staff, mainly ICT graduates, at its expanding base in downtown Belfast and at new premises near Birmingham.
“We’re delighted at the success of Asidua’s fundraising. All staff can rest assured that the money that they have raised will soon be hard at work in the developing world – tackling hunger and helping local communities to lift themselves out of poverty though health, education and livelihood programmes” added Deirdre Murphy, Corporate Fundraising Executive for Concern. The money raised by Asidua will have an enormous impact on the lives of people who need it most. Just £5 will buy food for a family in India for one week, and £10 will fund school supplies for four children in the Congo. In total, the money raised could fund the building of 2 birthing huts in Lao, dramatically improving welfare of mothers and babies in local villages. Alternatively, it could pay for the education of 500 former child labourers in Pakistan.

Business Telegraph: Software Firm In Jobs Expansion
12th March 2007
Software firm in jobs expansion
by Robin Morton, Business Correspondent, Belfast Telegraph
Business Telegraph [Monday, March 12, 2007, page 3]: Belfast-based software firm Asidua has unveiled plans to increase its workforce from 100 to 150 and expand into larger premises. The company, which is located at Weaver's Court in the Sandy Row area, plans to take on the 50 new staff over the next nine months. The new premises are currently approaching completion within the Weaver's Court complex, and the recruitment drive is poised to begin.
Asidua has two divisions - business services which handles corporate and public sector clients, and device services, which targets network equipment manufacturers. Steve Brankin, the chief executive officer of Asidua, said they had been winning new business worldwide because of their increased capability. The privately owned company, which was established five years ago, says 80% of its business is exports to customers overseas. It has been ploughing back its profits into an R&D laboratory and the expansion into additional accommodation.
Bob McClean, the company's sales and marketing director, said: "We are dealing with companies in locations ranging from the Republic to Japan, China, Finland and Germany. "The main factor constraining our growth is staff. We are primarily a services company and skilled, experienced people are the lifeblood of the organisation."
Mr McClean said that if it could not find sufficient numbers of experienced staff, who have been working in the industry for a number of years, the company might be forced to open offices overseas to facilitate its growth. He said that four million digital lines in the UK made their connection through a code which the Belfast company had developed.
He added: "The technology and the people making the equipment have to be ahead of the curve so we can be leading edge - but we need experienced people to do that."

Ulster Business: The Two Sides Of Asidua
1st January 2007
The Two Sides Of Asidua
by Emma Cowan, Editor
Ulster Business [December 2006, volume 17, number 12, page 22-24]: "...Dr Steve Brankin feels that, although Asidua's vision and strategy have become much clearer, few in the Northern Ireland business community really understand what the company does...
...John Flynn, Head of the Business Services Division explains that this division only deals with large enterprises that are service providers or public sector departments. Business Services offers Application & Data Integration, which allows customers like this to streamline and automate business processes, and to make the most of the customer data that they hold within their organisations...
...The Device Services Division, headed by Eddie Millsopp, operates in a global marketplace offering the core business of embedded telecoms integration. Within Device Services a lot of time is invested into getting to understand the latest telecom hardware components, so Asidua has the expertise already built up when vendors are ready to include the new components...
...Both these divisions, although different in terms of markets and service delivery, share a common ethos and expansion within Asidua is firmly on the cards..."

Shared Services In Context
Shared Services is firmly accepted as a key enabler of what is the main focus of public sector transformation – the improved delivery of public services to citizens.
Shared Services provides for the convergence and streamlining of functions to ensure that an organisation delivers services as effectively and efficiently as possible. The key advantage of this convergence is that it creates economies of scale, and indeed economies of skill, to enable multi function working.
However, in order to drive this convergence, technology is needed to enable the robust and scalable linking of the various enterprise and departmental systems that support the functions.
The Seminar
In this session Asidua’s Business Services Division will:
• Explain Shared Services within the context of public sector transformation.
• Contextualise the much talked about ‘Service Orientated Architecture (SOA)’ concept and explain the relationship between building an SOA and Shared Services.
• Provide practical advice on how to implement a sustainable and scalable Shared Services programme.
• Emphasise the role of technology as a key enabler of shared services. In particular we will show how, using Application and Data Integration, Service Oriented Architectures can be created that support, manage and monitor the interchange of data and processes between the systems to maximise effectiveness.
• Provide examples of line-of-business shared service implementations, and the benefits derived by the organisation.
* Full Seminar Agenda will follow. Please check back.

Asidua tackles gender imbalance in IT
28th June 2006
Belfast, Northern Ireland [June 28, 2006]: Asidua has hosted the first "Computer Clubs for Girls" (CC4G) visit in Northern Ireland as part of an initiative to encourage more females to take up careers in IT. Female members of Asidua’s technical team hosted a workshop for pupils from Grosvenor Grammar School to explain how they decided on an IT career. The pupils also had the chance to experiment with some examples of Asidua’s cutting edge work.
Computer services grew by 14 per cent last year but despite this progress the gender divide does not seems to be narrowing. Whilst Northern Ireland, with a 31 per cent female representation in the current workforce, exceeds the UK figure of 20 per cent, there is still considerable room for improvement.
Angela Canavan, Chief Operating Officer, Asidua, commented, “The statistics show that females are significantly under represented within the Northern Ireland ICT sector. So when Momentum approached us about hosting a workplace visit we responded with great enthusiasm. The girls from Grosvenor seemed to really enjoy the visit, so we hope to repeat the format with other schools when the new term starts in September.”
Momentum, the Northern Ireland ICT Federation who has co-ordinated this initiative, is pleased to be working in partnership with e-skills UK, the Sector Skills Council for IT and Telecoms to manage and deliver CC4G programme in Northern Ireland. e-skills UK developed the award-winning4 CC4G programme specifically to attract more females to what it terms ‘an exciting and rewarding career’.
Momentum acknowledges other key stakeholders, namely the financial support provided by the European Social Fund – Peace 11 Programme and DEL to enable this pilot to be offered free to participating schools. The support and assistance of C2k in ensuring a smooth transition of the product onto the Northern Ireland schools must also be noted.
